American musician and composer Gary Robert Rossington was better known by his given name.

He played lead and rhythm guitar for the Southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd and was the longest-serving surviving original member.

Together with his previous bandmate Allen Collins, Gary Rossington was a founding member of the Rossington Collins Band.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him together with other Lynyrd Skynyrd band members in 2006.

Much of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most famous songs, such as “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” were influenced by Rossington.

Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, a road manager, and other band members perished in a plane crash in 1977, three days after the release of their fifth studio album, “Street Survivors,” according to the band’s website.
