Gary Oelze passed away on January 23 at his home in Alexandria, Virginia.

He helped turn the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Virginia, from a sleepy neighborhood venue for folk and bluegrass musicians into a major stop for world-famous acts like soul and country performers. He was 80.

His wife, Susan Oelze, stated that congestive heart failure was to blame. Even though he suffered from two strokes the previous year, Mr. Oelze continued to work until the beginning of December.

The 500-seat venue owned by Mr. Oelze has recently hosted a variety of domestic and foreign performers, including bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs, current soul singers Raheem DeVaughn and Lalah Hathaway, and Senegalese vocalist Youssou N’Dour.

Additionally, the parent organization occasionally schedules acts in larger halls.

Numerous tributes poured in since the sudden demise of  Gary Oelze, Social media users could not hide their shock at his death news.

Gary Oelze’s legacy is the lives he touched, the performers he helped, and the inspiration through the music he presented at his Birchmere music hall. I am blessed to know him, his wife, Susan, and his Birchmere family and to have spent time working with him to document his club’s rich history. Gary was humble, generous, funny, and dedicated to his beloved Birchmere. He died peacefully. Thank you, Gary, for all you did for us. We will miss you beyond measure.

A heavy heart this evening, having just gotten the news that Gary Oelze has passed away at the age of 80. If I had never met Gary, I whole heartedly believe that I wouldn’t have a career in music. He was the manager and owner of The Birchmere Music Hall The Birchmere and he believed in me enough back in the day to offer me opening sets for nationally known artists, as well as helping me to afford my cherished Greven #1 guitar – he pulled a few strings (pun intended) to make that happen when I didn’t have a clue how I was going to pay for it. Most significantly, he talked me up to a CBS Records scout who was looking around for new acts to sign, and within a year I was a Columbia artist. The Birchmere will still bring world class music to the Washington, DC area, but it won’t be the same without Gary. Thank you old friend for your kindness, friendship and generosity – stars in your crown and a peaceful journey…
