Dan was born in Blyth, Northumberland, England on May 9, 1992.
Burn grew up in Blyth, Northumberland, following Newcastle United and idolizing Alan Shearer.

Burn was released by Newcastle United at the age of 11 and went on to play for local teams New Hartley, Blyth Town, and Blyth Spartans. When a scout for Darlington watched him playing for Blyth Spartans at the age of 16, he signed on professional terms with the club on July 1, 2009.

Burn signed a one-month youth loan with League One team Yeovil Town on September 25, 2012.

He made his debut four days later against Preston North End. Burn scored their own goal for Preston in the 86th minute, but a minute later he scored his first senior goal.

Burn signed a four-year deal with Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion for an unknown price on August 9, 2018. He was returned to Wigan Athletic on loan until January 2019.
