Edwards-Helaire was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she was born. He set a record by becoming the first freshman to play on the varsity football team.

He ran 58 times for 496 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior, earning him the title of MVP of the 5A State Championship Game. He made a commitment to Louisiana State University to play college football there.

During his time at Louisiana State University, Edwards-Helaire was a unanimous first-team All-SEC selection, and the league’s coaches placed him on the second team for his versatility.

By rushing for 103 yards and three touchdowns and receiving nine catches for 77 yards and a touchdown, he significantly contributed to LSU’s victory over third-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, the football team of Alabama State University.

He was also the only running back from the SEC to make it to the Doak Walker Award semifinals. He only made a few appearances against Oklahoma in the 2019 Peach Bowl due to a hamstring injury, but in the 2020 National Championship Game, he ran 16 times for 110 yards and grabbed five catches for 54 yards.
