Chris Del Mar AM, a Gold Coast GP and Bond University Professor of Public Health, died last weekend, three years after a catastrophic surfing accident.

Professor Del Mar was an outspoken supporter of evidence-based medicine and a vociferous opponent of antibiotic resistance.

Professor Del Mar was involved in a major accident in February of this year.

Before going to work, he went for a surf on the Gold Coast, but was pulled unconscious from the water and revived by lifesavers.

His C1 and C2 vertebrae were broken in the unexpected accident, and he spent three months in the ICU at Brisbane Hospital rehabilitating.
