Carroll Cooley Obituary, Retired Phoenix Police Captain
Daniel Johnson The Phoenix Police Department said Friday that retired Capt. Carroll Cooley had passed away.
Cooley was the arresting officer in the famous case that helped shape the Supreme Court’s Miranda rights decision, which mandates that suspects be informed of their rights. He was 87.
In a brief statement, Phoenix police stated that Cooley passed away on May 29 from an undisclosed illness. His final resting place, cause of death, and any details regarding services or survivors were not immediately known.
Cooley began working for the Phoenix Police Department in 1958 and retired in 1989.
Ernesto Miranda was detained by Cooley on March 13, 1963, for the kidnapping and rape of an 18-year-old Phoenix lady. Based on his handwritten confession, Miranda was ultimately found guilty and given a 20–30 year prison term.

Miranda filed an appeal, and the case ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which overturned the conviction in 1966 and ruled that suspects must be informed of their constitutional protections against self-incrimination and the right to counsel prior to questioning.
