Gates’s mother, the late Mary Maxwell was a businesswoman with vested interests in several businesses. She was on the boards of several large organizations, including First Interstate Bank, Unigard Security Insurance Group, and Pacific Northwest Bell.

She also served on the University of Washington’s board of regents for 18 years.
