Asap Rocky Sweden
After finishing his gig at Stadion, Rakim Mayers was arrested in July 2019 following an assault that ocurred on June 30, 2019, in Stockholm, Sweden. He and three of his allies beat, kicked, and cut Mustafa Jafari and another person with broken bottles. Jafari suffered several cuts, requiring stitches, and a fractured rib.
As if he’d done a pro thing, Mayers uploaded two videos of the incident to Instagram. In the first video, he repeatedly asked Jafari and his friend to stop following them. Jafari was heard complaining about his headphones which broke during a scuffle and which he used to hit Mayers’ bodyguard with.
According to Rakim Mayer’s defense attorney, Henrik Olsson Lilja, his client acted in self-defense after being attacked by Jafari. On the other hand, Jafari was initially suspected of harassment but prosecutors dropped his charges saying he acted in self-defense, after being grabbed by the neck and pushed by the bodyguard.
After Mayer’s arrest, he was kept in custody at Kronoberg Remand Prison until the trial, togethr with two of his allies who were on tour with him.
Shortly after his arrest, he was visited by personnel from the US embassy while several US artists including Kanye West called for a boycott of Sweden due to the incident. Donald Trump tweeted his support for Rocky’s release as well as former US ambassador to Sweden Mark Brzezinski.
Rakim Mayers was formally charged on July 25, with assault causing visible body harm. He pleaded not guilty. 2 of the witnesses against Mayers were afraid to appear in court and gave their statements via video link.
On August 14, 2019, Rakim Mayers was convicted of assault and given a suspended prison sentence and had to pay $1,270 in damages to Jafari. Since the rapper had already served over a month in jail for the incident, it was concluded that he did not need to serve any additional time. The conviction does not bar him from returning to Sweden.
The incident also brought him negative consequences as he cancelled his long awaited appearance at Western University’s Purple Fest in Canada after being denied a visa.
