On July 28, 1969, White was born in Manchester, Connecticut, to June and Dana White Sr. He is of Irish descent. White spent much of his childhood in Ware, Massachusetts.

For most of their childhoods, White and his sister, Kelly, were reared by their mother and her family. White’s mother worked as a nurse, and the family relocated to Las Vegas when White was in third grade because the city provided better pay for nurses. White went to Bishop Gorman High School, where he met Lorenzo Fertitta for the first time, though they did not become close friends until years later. White says he detested school and “was kicked out of Gorman twice”. Despite living in Nevada, the Whites spent their summers on the East Coast, visiting White’s grandparents in Levant, Maine, a small hamlet near Bangor. White’s senior year of high school was spent in Maine.

White enrolled in college twice after graduating from Hermon High School in 1987, once at Quincy College and once at UMass Boston, but dropped out both times during his first semester. During this time, he worked as an asphalt installer, a bouncer at an Irish club, and a bellhop at the Boston Harbor Hotel. White began boxing at the age of 17 and became friends with former Golden Gloves champion Peter Welch. White decided to enter the fight business as a result of this partnership, and he and Welch opened a boxing gym in Boston. White had planned to become a professional boxer but was scared off after watching a punch-drunk boxer and fearing he would suffer the same fate. White afterward worked as a boxercise instructor.
