Ana Mena is already missing a wonderful vacation with blue skies and sunshine. Mena loves gardening with her father, and growing her own vegetables. "A busy day in the garden can be a good form of exercise," says Lisa Wimmer, DNP. "While tending a garden, you perform functional movement that mimics whole body exercise. You perform squats and lunges while weeding. Carrying bags of mulch and other supplies works large muscle groups. Digging, raking and using a push mower can be physically intense activities."

Mena loves spending time with her beloved pup. "Perhaps one of the greatest psychological benefits of interacting with a dog is the opportunity it provides to be more mindful — to purposely focus your attention on the present moment," says Harvard Health. "Mindfulness is a lifelong practice that can help you to better appreciate simple everyday experiences like being physically active with your dog. By learning to focus on the here and now, you may find yourself less likely to get caught up in worries or regrets."

Mena enjoys coffee when she's on the go. "One of the things that people don't realize is, if you think of it as a medicine, then the best way to use it is in small, frequent doses," says neurologist Shannon Kilgore, MD. "So, 20 milligrams to 100 milligrams at a time as opposed to the standard American mug of coffee. And then just getting it into your brain a small amount at a time… if you're home with the increase of telework and things like that it might be easy to just serve yourself a little bit at a time throughout the day. Then, when you start to feel your mental performance lagging, take it a little bit more—up until 2 p.m."

Dancing is a big part of Mena's performances. "We have seen that dancing improves your emotional state. Furthermore, it seems to have an energizing effect," says Nicholas Smeeton, PhD. "Add in the known benefits of social interaction you get whilst dancing and it becomes a powerful way to improve your health and well-being."

Mena loves to travel and explore new places. "Travel itself can be a break from stressors piled up back home; a literal escape where you can focus on your own pleasure and yourself can be a welcome change of pace, and help reduce your body's stress hormone overdrive,' says Jean Kim MD. "Even when you return to stressors back home, the memories encoded by travel help maintain a 'zen space' you can revisit whenever you need. Mindfulness techniques often recommend returning to a beautiful or peaceful memory to help restore calm and balance anywhere you are."
