John, Clarence, and Alfred were three Anglin brothers who were notorious criminals in the late 50s. The three of them were arrested after they robbed a financial institution in 1958.

Among the three brothers, John and Clarence were extremely close and the two were transferred to the Alcatraz Penitentiary after they tried to escape from the Atlanta prison. The two escaped from Alcatraz Island along with another inmate Frank Morris in June 1962.

No, the Anglin brother, John, and Clarence were never found. The two managed to escape from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, a maximum-security facility located on Alcatraz Island.

John, Clarence, and Alfred Anglin were brothers born into a family of 13 in Donalsonville, Georgia. The three were arrested following their robbery of the Columbia Savings Ban Building, Columbia in 1958. All three of them received a sentence of 35 years and were sent to Atlanta Penitentiary. 

John and Clarence were transferred to Alcatraz after the two repeatedly tried to escape from the Atlanta Penitentiary. 

The two brothers along with Allen West and Frank Morris came up with an escape plan. The four inmates had met each other previously while incarcerated in Florida and Georgia.

On June 11, 1967, they executed their escape plan but only Frank, John, and Clarence managed to escape on an improvised inflatable raft, leaving Allen West behind. West failed to escape and remained on the island.

After numerous pursuits and failed attempts to locate the escapees, the FBI officially concluded the case in 1979. They concluded based on circumstantial evidence and a preponderance of expert opinion, that the escapees drowned themselves before they could reach land.

A photo of John and Clarence Anglin was found after their infamous escape from Alcatraz. According to the picture, the two brothers are posing in front of a farm in Brazil in 1975. A theory suggests the brothers escaped the prison and settled in Brazil.

A letter was recently found by one of their nephews, Nicholas Widner. The brothers had sent the letter more than 50 years ago which was sent before they escaped from Alcatraz Island. 

There was also a social media post about a letter possibly sent by John to law enforcement in 2013. According to the post, he was suffering from cancer and wanted to return to the United States. Although we are unsure about the authenticity of the letter, his family is sad as they could not help their lost relative who was suffering abroad.

Widner was disappointed by the recent discovery about his late uncles and felt helpless as he could not help them.
